We are particularly thrilled because this marks the inaugural edition within our annual series, «Balearic Islands, Sustainable Excellence,» where we have the distinct pleasure and honor of dedicating a feature exclusively to Formentera.

There are so many of us, myself included, who have been fortunate enough to experience some of the happiest moments of our lives on this island. Thank you, Óscar.

To begin, we would love to learn more about you. Tell us a bit about your personal journey and how your deep connection to Formentera has evolved over the years, leading to your current role as President of the Formentera Island Council.

Thank you, Patricia. We are much delighted to showcase the treasures of Formentera to The Ambassadors Sections international audience.

As you well know, Formentera possesses irresistible charms and resources that extend far beyond our crystal-clear waters and picture-postcard turquoise beaches.

To speak about my own journey, I would like to begin in a way that allows the reader to truly grasp the profound evolution of our homeland.

I was born in Formentera in 1975. When I look back and reflect on the moment I first left the island to study abroad, I realize that the geographical, social, and demographic reality we manage today is the result of extraordinary development.

Back then, Formentera had a census of around 4,000 residents at most. Imagine what that truly means: a genuine paradise.

Naturally, I grew up in an environment that was, by all accounts, idyllic for a child, given Formentera’s characteristics during those years.

At that time, tourism was barely in its infancy; it was neither organized nor fully developed.

Because of the island’s small dimensions, we grew up in a space where everyone knew one another. Every family was closely acquainted, and as a result, you formed a far tighter, more tight-knit bond with your peers than would be possible today.

I attended school here and then moved on to the high school. In those days, there was only one high school on the entire island—which still exists today, though the infrastructure is now significantly larger and more modern to adapt to contemporary needs and guarantee educational excellence.

Upon finishing high school, if you wanted to pursue higher education or university degrees, leaving Formentera was mandatory. Today, a vast range of careers and academic programs can be completed remotely through modern technology, but back then, that option simply did not exist.

Consequently, at that turning point in life, you had to decide whether to head to Mallorca, Barcelona, or make the leap abroad to continue your studies.

I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to study in France. I chose that path because, at the time, the financial cost of living and studying in France was virtually identical to moving to Barcelona. Furthermore, France offered far more public aid and student scholarships than had historically been available in Spain.

So, I made the decision to move to France to study, in an era, of course, when mobile phones did not exist, a reality that seems so distant to all of us now.

You had to physically walk to a public telephone booth just to call your parents. It is incredible how much our world has changed since then, though in Formentera, if one truly desires it, some things have changed much less…

For someone like me, born and raised in pre-tourism Formentera and thoroughly steeped in this purely Mediterranean soul, Hangzhou’s West Lake did not feel like a foreign geography at all. On the contrary, its landscapes of immense beauty felt like evocative echoes of my beloved Formentera.

Despite the thousands of miles separating them, that Asian expanse instantly transported my mind back to my island, as if both places shared invisible threads in their light and in their profound relationship with the beauty of their surroundings.

Those of us who carry the sea in our blood as a synonym for peace and solitude—as we Formenterenses do—can instinctively recognize nuances of Formentera in other corners of the planet.

This is because of the world of indescribable sensations this island gifts us, such as contemplating the sunrise over the serene, mirror-like waters of La Savina, or the deep silence experienced in the most intimate corners of our island, like the Estany Pudent or the Estany des Peix.

Formentera is defined by the conservation of its ecosystems, by the immense environmental value of its protected territory, and by the crystal transparency of our waters, thanks to our Posidonia Oceanica seagrass meadows.

We Formenterenses carry a deep philosophy of respect engraved within us—manifested when we walk or cycle slowly, ensuring we do not disrupt the delicate balance of our territory.

Historically, Formentera has been, and continues to be, the favored sanctuary for painters, poets, and musicians who find inexhaustible inspiration to create within its magnetic magic and idyllic light.

In contrast to the accelerated pace of the rest of the world, that experience in China, so far from home, served as the perfect mirror to understand that Formentera’s ultimate treasure is that it demands to be experienced slowly.

Formentera is a genuine paradise built on a human scale, offering the definitive escape toward spiritual disconnection and a return to nature alive.

Upon concluding that deeply enriching chapter in Asia, I began my journey back home, though with an interim chapter in Menorca.

I spent three years teaching there, adding further experiences to a voyage that, ultimately, always had an inevitable destination: the return to my beloved Formentera, where I am now permanently rooted once again.

Formentera is my home, my sanctuary, the paradise that witnessed my own childhood, and where I now watch my four-year-old son grow up.

I am thoroughly convinced that this accumulated international background, far from distancing me from my roots, is precisely what grants me the perspective and the broadness of vision required today to understand how to protect and help our homeland thrive.

Formentera demands a global outlook to safeguard its local essence. Under that very premise, public service presented itself to me as the ideal avenue to materialize this lifelong commitment, and today I carry the immense honor and the profound responsibility of presiding over the Formentera Island Council.

I find myself right on the threshold of turning fifty, at a moment of absolute fulfillment in life and with my energy at its peak to confront the challenges that lie ahead.

I do so with the firm conviction that we can govern and steer the island’s course toward its finest version, guided by the maturity that time provides and the freshness that the future demands.

We do this so that tomorrow, my son, and his children’s children, can continue to enjoy this marvelous, globally unique environment.

Óscar, Formentera stands as a global archetype for island sustainability.

Yet, the island’s ongoing demographic and tourism evolution demands an unyielding, absolute commitment to the environment.

How is the protection of such a fragile ecosystem orchestrated today, particularly regarding its waters and that crowning natural jewel: the Posidonia?

The sense of community belonging on Formentera possesses a singular, powerful resonance; we share an absolute, collective certainty that our territory must be safeguarded at all costs.

As an island of compact geographical dimensions, we are intrinsically a far more fragile ecosystem, uniquely vulnerable to the weight of any external impact. Yet, it is precisely within this delicate balance that our greatest treasure resides: the Posidonia Oceánica.

While Posidonia thrives throughout the Balearic Islands, its presence along our coastline is the definitive brushstroke that shapes Formentera’s core visual and chromatic identity—that living mosaic of blues, that unmistakable, breathtakingly intense turquoise hue of our crystal-clear waters.

This submerged sanctuary, the Posidonia, is the true architect of Formentera’s ecological matrix and color, operating under the strict legal protection of the Ses Salines d’Eivissa and Formentera Natural Park. Nevertheless, institutional protection is never a static milestone; it is an active, evolving commitment.

Rigorous scientific assessments are conducted annually to audit these underwater meadows, and current indicators confirm their health remains exceptional—a direct result of targeted environmental governance programs that have successfully cultivated a robust collective conscience regarding their ecological value.

However, the definitive challenge of our upcoming management phase lies in mitigating the real operational footprint that Posidonia endures within the natural park itself.

Due to our insularity, access to Formentera is exclusively maritime, forcing every single visitor to enter from the north and navigate directly over this vital underwater green lung. During the peak summer season, the frequency of regular ferry lines between Ibiza and Formentera reaches a critical intensity.

This is precisely where we must intervene with strategic foresight. Consequently, we have formally presented a pivotal, non-negotiable premise to the Port Authority: the rigorous sustainability framework we already successfully enforce on dry land through vehicle regulation must now be mirrored, symmetrically and urgently, across our maritime space.

With constant connections operating uninterruptedly from dawn until well into the night, Formentera’s great contemporary challenge is auditing and regulating marine transit.

During the summer months, the sheer density of vessels compels us to be far more demanding. This includes vital initiatives such as the environmental regulation and protection of the Estany des Peix, ensuring that mooring and nautical activities in the area respect the highest conservation standards for our coastline.

The sustainability of tomorrow is no longer measured solely on the shore, but out at sea.

Óscar, the pressure exerted on a geographically finite territory demands the implementation of bold political instruments.

What is the strategic roadmap of the Formentera Council to manage seasonal pressure and neutralize the risk of saturation on the island?

Our strategy is explicitly not designed to attract more tourists, as I believe we have already hit our absolute ceiling regarding visitor numbers.

We are not seeking to break quantitative records; instead, our mission is to manage the destination by prioritizing quality.

We must not grow in absolute numbers, but rather in tourism expenditure and the sheer excellence of the visitor experience.

Our goal is to elevate quality, appealing to a visitor who generates genuine value. Ultimate success lies in welcoming fewer tourists while ensuring far greater profitability for the local economy.

Evidently, we are acutely aware that the island’s dynamics shift entirely from winter to summer.

Tourism provides, and has historically provided, immensely valuable economic wealth, but our current responsibility is to meticulously manage the impacts derived from it.

With this objective in mind, we are working rigorously through various advanced technical assessments.

The cornerstone of these is an exhaustive analysis of Formentera’s real carrying capacity.

It is a completely different reality to manage a population of twelve thousand residents in winter versus absorbing between thirty and forty thousand people in summer, which places an undeniable strain on all public infrastructures.

We require precise data regarding wastewater treatment capacities, drinking water distribution, waste management, and road mobility. There are countless operational implications that we must be absolutely certain the territory can sustain.

Consequently, the duty of the Formentera Council is to manage the day-to-day balance so that both the resident and the tourist feel as comfortable as possible, guaranteeing that residents do not see their quality of life compromised, and that visitors leave the island fulfilled, having enjoyed an excellent tourism experience.

It is a matter of pure equilibrium.

Building on this, we are also working intensely to combat illegal tourist accommodations and maintain strict order across the island—an area where we have already begun enforcing decisive measures.

The objective is not to systematically dismantle or prohibit economic activity, but to manage it in the best possible manner to safeguard the resident, while ensuring that those who visit us also contribute actively and responsibly to respecting and protecting this land.

It is fundamentally a matter of education and awareness. Visitors traveling to Formentera must know exactly where they are going and understand the vital importance of respecting our unique character—the very characteristics that allow us to offer them the spectacular beauty of our natural environment.

Furthermore, we have commissioned a specific study on the impact of day-trippers. There is a vast influx of people who arrive on the island only to depart that very same evening, treating Formentera as a rapid excursion from Ibiza with the sole intent of capturing a perfunctory photo on our paradise beaches.

This is not the profile of tourist we seek, and we want to thoroughly understand the consequences of this behavior: exactly how many there are, what activities they engage in—if any, beyond taking some pictures for their social media—and what footprint their passage leaves on our territory.

We are analyzing this in meticulous detail, and as soon as we possess the scientific data, we will undoubtedly have to make regulatory decisions.

We neither want nor can afford to allow the island to collapse under unmeasured pressure from visitors who do not explore, do not stay overnight, do not shop, and do not dine on the island.

The success of our tourism model inevitably depends on safeguarding a Premium experience, defending the interests of the tourist who truly appreciates, respects, and values what Formentera offers, and fiercely protecting and supporting our local business fabric through key collaborative spaces like the Social Dialogue Table.

That makes so much sense, Óscar. It is a remarkably wise and precise approach.

Actually, the ‘formentera.eco‘ project has already established itself as an international benchmark for sustainable mobility.

How is this vehicle regulation framework evolving, and what are the priorities for the upcoming seasons?

We view the formentera.eco program, which launched in 2019, as an absolute triumph, indeed.

The most profound aspect of what we have designed is that it is not merely a superficial plan or a basic project to restrict cars. It is a comprehensive management system for the vehicles operating across the island, determining with mathematical precision which ones can enter, when they arrive, and the exact moment they must depart.

This regulation is strictly enforced during the four core months of summer, from June 1st to September 30th, aligning with peak tourism season and the weeks when our territory is at its most vulnerable.

This model has served as a highly successful pilot project for the entire region. Inspired by our success, the Ibiza Island Council has already resolved to implement it, Mallorca is currently processing its own regulatory framework, and Menorca is widely expected to follow a similar path.

Beginning in Formentera, given our smaller scale, proved technically more viable than if Mallorca had attempted it overnight; their space and mobility operate on a scale that is simply incomparable to ours. However, thanks to our early initiative, there is now a proven blueprint and a wealth of prior learning that will greatly assist the rest of the Balearic Islands in implementing the measure.

Our responsibility is to manage finite road space. We operate with specific quotas allocated to residents alongside capped commercial fleets for car and motorcycle rentals.

Ultimately, the role of the Formentera Council is to dictate exactly how many vehicles can circulate on the island each day.

During the initial years of the project, we successfully reduced the rental vehicle fleet by 17%. For this summer of 2026, we have consolidated a historic cap, achieving a 16% global reduction in authorized vehicles on the island.

This is reinforced by a strategic fiscal framework where the daily access fee for passenger cars is set at €9.00 per day, with a minimum payment of €45.00.

Through these measures, we have progressively lowered the quotas for outside visitors entering Formentera with cars or motorcycles, disincentivizing the footprint of fleeting day-trips while rewarding Premium, extended stays.

Pioneering initiatives like formentera.eco demonstrate the political courage required to establish a true carrying capacity, mathematically limiting vehicular access during months of peak seasonal vulnerability.

As we have seen, the success of Formentera’s tourism strategy is measured by excellence—in the well-being of our permanent residential population and in our ability to offer visitors a high-quality, authentic, positive, and desessionalized experience.

Our returning guests include prominent entrepreneurs, public figures, international investors, elite athletes, and high-level executives who dream of their island stay all year round.

Here, they find a sanctuary for true corporate disconnection, a deep reconnection with nature, and a unique environment where they can once again listen to the sound of silence and the beat of their own heart.

Formentera is not a destination for a single day’s snapshot; it is a paradise that invites you to stay, to slow down, and to let time pass at its own pace.

It encourages moving with the sun, the sunset, the stars, and the moon, immersing oneself in a mindful lifestyle that is, in essence, the only one truly worth living.

In Formentera, every landscape invites rest and contemplation—even those that reign beneath the waves.

The evaluation of this initial phase of managing formentera.eco is highly satisfactory.

With fleet containment and entry control now fully established, data from the recent summer period indicates that both traffic flow and road safety have noticeably improved compared to previous years.

This confirms that we are rapidly approaching the optimal equilibrium point on our highways.

We carry out this control directly from the Consell’s mobility department.

It is an in-house development that we manage through a network of cameras equipped with artificial intelligence.

These cameras indicate to us every day, and with absolute precision, how many vehicles enter, how many leave, and how many are circulating simultaneously.

We have a highly valuable volume of statistical data and, thanks to the management of this information, we can make rigorous forecasts before adopting government decisions.

The result of this containment has been extremely positive; we now know that access to Formentera responds to rigorous planning and a real carrying capacity controlled by the administration.

We have full confidence in this project and continue to work on it, improving and adjusting it wherever we detect it may have become unbalanced.

In this regard, we have identified some specific issues that require correction.

The technical procedure requires that, in order to remedy them, a legislative amendment must be processed, which must be approved by an absolute majority in the Balearic Parliament.

However, given that the community of Formentera and all the island’s political forces are moving in exactly the same direction, I see it as entirely feasible to submit this proposal to the regional chamber and refine those specific misalignments that practice has revealed to us over these two years.

Naturally, the residents of Formentera face no mobility restrictions whatsoever and move about with total freedom.

Likewise, citizens of Ibiza who travel to Formentera for daily work purposes benefit from exemptions and a specific quota to guarantee the absolute normality of their activity; these are essential dynamics that the regulations successfully foresaw at their inception.

On the other hand, there are clearly further areas that I believe we can optimize.

My absolute priority for the coming year is to strictly implement vehicle environmental labels to begin restricting the most polluting cars.

Formentera represents the ideal laboratory to lead this green transition.

Regarding our broader infrastructure, it is true that we are currently managing the highest budget in the history of the Council.

Yet, the reality remains that the overall figure is still modest relative to the island’s true requirements, hovering around 50 million euros.

One must bear in mind that we simultaneously handle purely municipal competencies alongside shared regional powers.

The spectrum of responsibility is vast, and the current expenditure on public personnel naturally absorbs a significant portion of these resources.

Consequently, we are inherently dependent on institutional collaboration with other levels of government to materialize real infrastructure investments on Formentera.

Without the financial backing of the Balearic Government or the State, executing structural projects would prove exceptionally complex.

A prime example of this partnership is the extensive resurfacing we have undertaken across a major portion of our main highway.

When we took office, we inherited a severely degraded road surface that was actively compromising user safety.

We addressed this immediately, securing extraordinary funding from the Balearic Government under the non-negotiable premise that an optimal road network is indispensable—not just for motor vehicles, but for the cyclists and pedestrians who share it.

In parallel, we manage an incredibly vast capillary network of rural, unpaved dirt tracks.

Their preservation demands a titanic technical and human effort; we deploy dedicated crews and heavy machinery that work uninterruptedly in the field to keep them passable.

The challenge intensifies when extreme meteorological events—such as the severe storms and flooding we have experienced recently—entirely destroy months of hard work in a matter of hours.

The economic dilemma is formidable if we wish to rebuild these rural pathways without succumbing to the easy temptation of systemic paving.

A paved road resists heavy rainfall far better, yet coating our traditional tracks in asphalt would completely dilute the historic identity of the island.

For this reason, we are actively researching the application of innovative techniques and eco-friendly binding materials.

Our goal is to increase the resilience of these dirt tracks against both inclement weather and the heavy axle weight of modern commercial vehicles, whose tires rapidly accelerate ground erosion.

The entire structural overhaul of our infrastructure is indissolubly linked to the evolution of public transit.

A project of the scale and ambition of formentera.eco imperatively requires a collective mobility network fully adapted to the demands of the twenty-first century.

At the Formentera Council, we are working intensively on designing a new contractual framework for public transportation.

While this administrative transition consolidates—with the new contract projected to take effect next fiscal year—we have already implemented immediate operational upgrades.

We have increased bus frequencies across multiple routes and significantly extended late-night service hours.

This latter measure has been highly praised as a vital safety and prevention asset, streamlining night travel for our youth and receiving an exceptional reception from the local population.

Our broader strategic vision is to complement the regulations of formentera.eco with a sweeping transformation of both public transit and our taxi service, whose seasonal fleet has also been expanded.

The ultimate objective is to offer alternatives of such high excellence that visitors simply have no practical need for a private vehicle.

If we structurally diminish the availability of rental cars, it is logical and necessary to balance that vacuum with an efficient, sustainable mobility ecosystem.

This paradigm shift presents a critical awareness challenge for the future.

We must sensitize users to the importance of optimizing their travel habits, discouraging single-occupancy vehicle use while actively promoting carpooling.

It is vital that visitors recognize that our bus network operates with superb regularity, with scheduled arrivals every 15, 20, or 30 minutes that allow for seamless transit across the entire island.

In this regard, it is only fair to highlight that younger generations demonstrate a vastly superior environmental consciousness, utilizing public transport as their default choice.

This highly positive dynamic serves as a powerful encouragement to persevere with this management trajectory.

Finally, the Port of La Savina presents a long-standing parking dilemma that has persisted for many years.

For the current fiscal year, we have secured a strategic agreement with the Port Authority that has enabled us to expand surface parking spaces, effectively reclaiming a thoroughfare that had been previously eliminated.

However, we are fully aware that the definitive, long-term resolution demands the implementation of a permanent public transit shuttle system operating between Sant Francesc and La Savina.

The ultimate goal is to allow users to park with complete peace of mind in Sant Francesc, where we possess a significantly larger parking capacity, and seamlessly complete their journey to the Port of La Savina via our collective transit network.

This alternative is already fully operational, guaranteeing a connection at least every thirty minutes.

Our responsibility now is to communicate this solution with absolute clarity to both residents and visitors alike, reinforcing the certainty that saturating the port’s surroundings with private vehicles is entirely unnecessary.

What policies are you championing from the Formentera Council to protect the primary sector and foster proximity commerce against the forces of global standardization?

This is one of our foremost priorities.

Thus far in our term, we have already increased direct subsidies by 14% for cultural associations, sports clubs, and, most prominently, our primary sector.

We possess an absolute determination to direct firm, unyielding support toward our primary sector, because our fields and our sea constitute the very root of Formentera’s most genuine identity.

The maintenance of our traditional llaüts and artisanal fishing boats, alongside a decisive push for our agricultural cooperative, are not merely elements of nostalgia; they are strategic and foundational pillars of our real economy.

There is a complete, cross-departmental commitment to local products.

Defending the primary sector is the direct avenue to safeguarding our proximity economy and protecting the livelihood of our families.

We collaborate intensively with the agricultural cooperative with the firm purpose of reactivating the farmlands and tillage fields that form the spine of the island.

We are fully aware that we possess an exceptional, singular pantry: we boast fresh Formentera fish caught through artisanal fishing methods, ous de tanca—our traditional, local farm-fresh eggs—and a product of exceptional purity, which is our local Formentera honey.

In parallel, we maintain a close alliance with our local small and medium-sized enterprises.

We have developed a specific promotional blueprint dedicated to Formentera’s traditional commerce—an initiative we have successfully integrated into all of our off-island destination marketing campaigns.

This effort is being extraordinarily well-received by our business fabric because it grants them significant premium visibility, while fiercely protecting and boosting proximity shops against the currents of global homogenization.

Óscar, Formentera undeniably captivates visitors with the breathtaking beauty of its beaches, a natural heritage that is truly unique in the world.

However, it retains travelers through a wealth of other distinct charms, such as its cultural soul, its traditions, and its ethnographic landscape.

How do you translate this rich heritage into the visitor narrative, elevating their stay into an unparalleled travel experience?

The soul of Formentera resides in pure, direct contact with nature, in technological disconnection, in rediscovering oneself, and in the precious ability to slow down and decelerate that dizzying pace of life people carry from elsewhere in the world—a pace that, nowadays, often feels humanly unsustainable.

In the times we live in, the mind and body imperatively demand these pockets of serenity, for which Formentera stands as the ideal—I would even say unparalleled—destination.

Describing the ideal experience on Formentera involves showcasing an exceptionally wide spectrum of possibilities; each visitor possesses the absolute freedom to select and curate their own journey according to the memories they wish to create.

It brings to mind a cinematic production from quite a few years ago that left a powerful mark on the collective imagination, Lucía & Sex (Lucía y el Sexo), a film where the protagonist escapes the metropolis and journeys to Formentera seeking—and finding—that deep calm she so desperately needed.

That immersion, in Formentera, is real.  

The island acts as a perfect natural regulator; you step ashore and simply allow it to envelop you in its stillness.

When we delve into the core of our identity, the simple ritual of waking up in the morning and enjoying a leisurely breakfast in the main square of Sant Francesc becomes something truly marvelous.

It is equally restorative to take a bicycle, a vehicle, or simply walk along our extensive network of rural paths.

Traveling down these trails, one can contemplate the exquisite craftsmanship of the dry-stone walls flanking the roadsides, observe the cultivated fields, and witness, with pride, that our land remains beautifully alive and tended.

Admiring the majesty of our propped fig trees—so intrinsic and characteristic of Formentera’s traditional agricultural engineering—and contemplating the gentle scenes of livestock grazing freely is to connect with the living essence of our land.

This is an ethnographic legacy that we cannot afford to lose under any circumstance.

We do not market Formentera solely as a sun-and-sea destination. Visitors can and absolutely should experience our beaches, of course yes, because our coastline is obviously breathtaking, is our primary allure and an essential, singular experience that must be lived.

However, there is a vast spectrum of other activities and experiences of incalculable natural and cultural heritage value waiting to be uncovered across Formentera.

In the area of La Mola, for instance, we possess three emblematic watchtowers dating back to the eighteenth century.

Currently, one of them has been completely restored and opened to the public, allowing visitors to thoroughly tour and explore its interior architecture.

This project featured a masterful architectural restoration led by the renowned Formenterense architect Marià Castelló, whose studio has accumulated prestigious national and international accolades.

Castelló executed a heritage intervention defined by fantastic sensitivity and a profound respect for the historical materials.

While we acknowledge that the tower’s positioning within the landscape’s rugged relief does not offer a straightforward or effortless physical approach, making the journey to visit it is immensely rewarding, especially to experience the historic perspective preserved within its walls.

This is a highly treasured recommendation and an authenticity benchmark we offer to all premium travelers seeking to forge a genuine connection with the island’s true heritage.

For us, as we have established, the absolute priority is the well-being of our people.

If we can ensure that our residents maintain the quality of life they require and deserve to live on this island, it means the island is functioning successfully.

If residents are content and thriving, our visitors will inherently be content and thrive as well.

The precise moment that equilibrium fails—when residents feel compelled to protest or abandon the island because the environmental and social pressure becomes unsustainable in their daily lives—is the exact moment our tourism model could suffer irremediable damage.

Therefore, our people remain the ultimate barometer for measuring that balance.

As previously noted, Formentera’s demographics have shifted substantially, growing from the 4,000 inhabitants of my childhood to a stable residential population of approximately 12,000 individuals today.

Native families now live side-by-side with new residents who arrived on the island drawn by our quality of life and the career opportunities of our local economy, and ultimately chose to put down roots.

However, this growth presents us with highly complex structural challenges.

Formentera is currently confronting—much like the rest of the Balearic Islands and mainland Spain—a severe deficit in housing, which stands as one of the most serious, critical, and pressing issues facing our society today.

To mitigate this housing emergency, which strains our community and drives away our youth and essential professionals, the Formentera Council is acting with absolute determination.

We have launched an ambitious housing initiative by transferring public land parcels to the Balearic Government for the immediate construction of official, rent-controlled public housing.

We simply cannot allow an unchecked real estate market to dismantle our social cohesion.

Compounding this structural strain is the complex management challenge posed by seasonal migration patterns, which inevitably amplifies the operational pressure exerted on our public personnel and security forces.

For this reason, we firmly demand greater institutional coordination with the Government Delegation and the State’s Insular Directorate.

We urgently require the allocation of adequate resources and the optimization of security competencies so that our law enforcement and social service teams can address this humanitarian and operational reality with the highest standards of excellence and dignity.

This is essential to guarantee that our residents preserve the peace and tranquility that define our quality of life throughout the entire year.

Óscar, Formentera’s cultural agenda and traditions operate as the true engine behind your tourism desestacionalization strategy.

How do music, sport, and the visual arts integrate into the Council’s vision to project Formentera as an active, premium destination throughout the entire year?

Our strategic vision centers on firmly driving the island’s desestacionalization through culture, nature, and sport—three disciplines that operate as universal languages open to all generations and backgrounds.

For this reason, we maintain a highly active, year-round calendar of cultural and athletic programming, championing bespoke, curated events that help diversify visitor arrivals outside the core weeks and months of the summer season.

I want to reiterate that Formentera offers a complete immersion that demands to be experienced without haste.

We boast well-established milestones such as the classic Mitja Marató de Formentera (Formentera Half Marathon), a benchmark sporting event that annually attracts thousands of international runners seeking to experience the beauty of our landscape through physical effort and self-improvement.

On a purely musical plane, the island’s great flagship is the Formentera Jazz Festival—an iconic gathering that elevates the destination to heights of profound intellectual sophistication through music.

It is a fantastic experience to witness the exceptional level of musicians performing on the island and to enjoy these evening concerts directly in the village square, enveloped in an intimate atmosphere under the brilliant artistic direction of Ángel March, who curates an absolutely masterful selection of talent.

We have been immensely fortunate to receive a historic donation of contemporary artworks from Cati Verdera, one of the most prominent art collectors in our community and the former director of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Ibiza.

Visiting this space has now become an essential cultural stop and a true benchmark of authenticity: the restored historic building beautifully displays fifty-five high-caliber works created from the 1940s to the present day by artists who have chosen Formentera as their muse.

The space functions as a majestic window open to the cliffs and the open sea, enveloping the visitor in an indescribable energy and proving that our island remains a living sanctuary for contemporary creation.

Yes. Thanks to its exceptionally low light pollution and an infrastructure seamlessly integrated with nature, the island’s warm, dark sky becomes a pristine natural window into the universe.

By strictly regulating its grid to ensure near-zero light leakage, Formentera has preserved a completely unblemished, ink-black velvet sky.

From the raw, dramatic cliffside landscape of Cap de Barbaría to the sheer geographic isolation of La Mola, residents and travelers can track the dense, glowing core of the Milky Way from March through October, witness the cinematic surge of the summer Perseids, or map out deep-space nebulae in the crisp winter air.

To truly understand our administrative structure, it is worth noting that the Formentera Island Council has operated independently since 2007, unifying both purely insular competencies and the local town hall’s municipal attributes into a single, high-proximity institution.

This integration provides us with a level of public management agility and efficiency that is ideally suited for responding swiftly to contemporary challenges and guaranteeing absolute excellence across all of our public services.

In the 2023 elections, our coalition, running under the banner of Sa Unió, secured a historic absolute majority—marking our government’s first entry into leading this institution.

This direct, overwhelming mandate from our citizens grants us immense executive legitimacy, while simultaneously tasking us with the profound responsibility of managing with rigorous precision to pass the island on to future generations in its finest possible condition.

We are currently in the first legislative term of this project.

Personally, standing right on the threshold of turning fifty, I find myself in a moment of total fulfillment and energy to steer the course of our territory.

My son is now four years old. We work everyday thinking about the Formentera we want his grandchildren to find. And the grandchildren of his grandchildren.

Our governing objective is explicitly not to break quantitative records for visitor numbers, nor will we capitulate to the pressures of generalized mass tourism.

Our priority is, and will always remain, to shield the quality of life of our permanent population and to consolidate a balanced, sustainable, and Premium tourism model.
