Jesús María Calvo, immense man with a close personality and a firm honest look as the turquoise colour of the sea of our islands, arrived in Mallorca in May 1996, full of enthusiasm, dreams and hopes.
Today, after more than twenty years at the helm of the real estate agency he founded in 1999 in Palma de Mallorca, Jesús opens to us the doors of Balearhouse to tell us all about almost a quarter of a century of success, in a Mallorca more dazzling than ever.
Jesus, thank you very much for receiving us today for this interview in The Ambassadors Sections, reviewing the profile and trajectory of Mallorca’s most successful entrepreneurs, in order to show the world that these islands are not only a magnificent destination to visit, but also a unique place in the world to invest, to work, and of course to live.
Thank you, Patricia. Mallorca and the Mallorcans have given me everything, and I am much delighted to participate in the noble task of contributing to take the name of Mallorca to the top.
Jesús, since Balearhouse was born in your hands almost 25 years ago, today it is considered one of the main Luxury Real Estate Agencies in Mallorca.
What would you say stands out as your main added value, that unique factor that differentiates Balearhouse from so many other real estate agencies in Mallorca and the Balearic Islands?
Well, I would say that there are several factors. First of all, that we are a family-owned company.
Balearhouse was founded by me with the help of my wife Ilka in 1999, it was just the two of us, with a lot of enthusiasm and putting a lot of effort and many hours into this work that I am so passionate about, and in which I get involved with absolute love and devotion.
That family business factor, in a way, already entails a way of seeing and doing things with a specific approach, different from that which can occur in large multinational companies. Both the approach and the philosophy are different.
Here at Balearhouse we are known for providing a very close and personalized service to our clients, in a trusting environment and in a very welcoming and familiar atmosphere.
Over the years, we’ve been growing mostly by word of mouth. Our source of new clients usually comes from the recommendations of clients with whom we have already worked before: A satisfied customer tells a friend that they need to sell, buy or rent in Mallorca and the friend, who ends up equally satisfied with the experience, tells another friend…and so we have been forging a trajectory that has extended over time, and with it our network of clients has grown, and in our case, by extension…also our friends.
A good friend of mine, a notary, with whom we have worked on countless occasions, often says with a laugh: «Jesus sells houses with friends» and I think it’s a funny phrase that really illustrates quite well what we do and how we do it.
Everything in our Balearhouse universe revolves around this philosophy.
And that’s how we started and how we continue to this day, because what we’ve tried to achieve from the beginning is to make of Balearhouse a Real Estate Consulting Boutique where the best people give the best service to our customers.
Today, we are happy with what we have achieved, with our positioning in the market and we feel the same desire as the first day to continue to help people to find the house of their dreams in Mallorca.
Jesus, we all have a love story with Mallorca and the best way to describe yours would undoubtedly be «Love at First Sight»…
Absolutely, it was. I fell in love with this island as soon as I arrived, it was a fulminating infatuation back then, and I’m still just as in love now. Or more.
In love with the Balearic Islands in general, I would say, but this island… Mallorca, this light that we have here, this color of the sea, of the sky, I don’t know if it is our position in the heart of the Mediterranean, but I have not seen this light that Mallorca has anywhere else in the world.
I fell in love with everything about Mallorca, starting with its people. The Mallorcans have supported me and helped me a lot along my way, I feel very grateful and I am happy to live here. As soon as I arrived in Mallorca I knew I was going to die here, you know? (Laughs) I thought, «I’m not moving from here anymore», it was very clear to me that I was going to retire here.
Mallorca offers an unrivalled quality of life during the twelve months of the year. Everyone talks about the beaches, which are amazing of course, recognized for their beauty worldwide and that have nothing to envy to the Caribbean itself, but another factor that I value very much, because as a good Navarrese I am an inveterate Gourmet, is the quality of the gastronomy.
Today, Mallorca has 11 Michelin-stars restaurants, which makes the island a true paradise also for good food. And this climate, with more than 300 days of sunshine a year… for me, Mallorca truly has it all.
As a father of two girls, I also value safety very much. I can be having lunch or dinner on a terrace, without any worries while my daughters run around up and down, there is no other city in Spain that enjoys the level of security of Mallorca, and this is also a very important added value, especially for family tourism.
It is indeed an ideal place, both to visit and to live.
Jesus, you have a very magnetic and refreshing personality, a lot of charisma and a very well lived life, tell us a little more about your personal story, which is endearing and beautiful, and how those first years were here in Mallorca.
Well, when I arrived in Mallorca, at first I wasn’t looking to work or to stay here, actually, but, as has happened to many of us, you know when you arrive in Mallorca but never when you will leave… if you leave…, but due to life circumstances I started working at the mythical Flanigan Restaurant, one of the most recognized and refined restaurants in Mallorca with an excellent location in Puerto Portals, hand in hand with my dear friend and professional mentor Miguel Arias, and later on, I also worked in a company that assembles air conditioning systems, and it was while doing my job there that I began to get to know and visit many of the spectacular properties and mansions on this island.
Inside of me, there was a 180º turn, and soon I told the CEO a that time: «It’s just that I’ve realized that what I really want to do is not sell air conditioning systems for these houses in Mallorca: what I want is to sell these houses in Mallorca».
A turning point…
I felt that decision from the bottom of my heart.
That’s when My Dream was born, wrapped in the absolute certainty that I was going to make it come true.
And the CEO, as the good man and good businessman he was, because he was truly like a father to all of us who worked with him, warned me: «Well, Jesus, but keep in mind that this is not easy…»
I had no doubt that it was not going to be easy, but the decision was made from an inner space of absolute conviction, so we reached an agreement to continue working with them in the mornings, and in the afternoons I started working in a real estate agency in the Calvià area, and for months I worked tirelessly combining the two jobs: I would finish at the air conditioning assembly company and went straight to work at the real estate agency in the afternoons.
Many days I barely had time to eat, I had a quick sandwich wherever I could and continued with my work marathon days, but the important thing is that I had started in the real estate sector.
Courageous and hardworking, two common characteristics of successful entrepreneurs.
Well, yes, especially for those of my generation, because those were times when what almost everyone aspired to was to have a permanent job. But I knew that this was for me, that I was capable, and that I was going to at least try.
That’s how I established my beginnings in the real estate sector, I started to meet clients and suppliers until I decided to take the step and establish myself in the sector with my own company, so I founded Balearhouse in 1999, slowly but surely and doing things right. First with some rentals, then with some sales, and that’s how our journey began, which continues today with the same enthusiasm as in those early years.
And here we are, 25 years later, with my Dream Come True and helping people make theirs too.
Everything worth in life starts as a dream, and if you have the determination, perseverance and mental clarity to add tenacity, effort and a job well done, things start to work out and you have turned your dream into reality.
Plus, you have a personality with great commercial skills
Yes, because I like people and I have always had my parents, Mari Carmen and Casimiro, as two great references in my life, and this is very important.
My parents, both merchants and self-employed from humble origins and both very hardworking, have always been my greatest inspiration and my best example of tenacity, effort, daily dedication and sacrifice.
For them, there were no weekends or holidays. Mari Carmen, my mother, has always been a very persevering, dedicated and exemplary woman in her efforts to work every day of the week, without exception, always working planning and organizing at the store, while attending to and educating my sister Estrella and me.
In Lesaka, the small and beautiful little Navarrese village where I was born, my mother has always had a grocery store in the town square, next to the Town Hall, and I have grown up since I was little, along with my sister, dedicating a good part of my free time to work, helping in the store as much as I could and doing errands.
There were many hours stolen from leisure and other childhood distractions, but the experience forged my character from a young age and helped me learn and lay the foundations of a profession that is still based on good communication, close connection and trust with the client.
Among the values and principles that my parents instilled in us, they always transmitted to us the importance of work as an opportunity to progress and to open the doors to an always better future and that honesty is part of the heritage of each family.
My father, Casimiro, first worked with my mother delivering the store’s orders to the houses. I always say that. he was doing 50 years ago what Amazon does today.
There was always a hustle and bustle because friends and customers called each other with what they needed: «Hey Mari Carmen, I need two boxes of wine and this and that» and my father would load all the orders into his van and distribute them among all the houses and farmhouses in the area wherever they were, whether in Lesaka itself or in the Cinco Villas, all to give the best service and make it easier for people to buy everything they needed.
Later on, my father also opened his own bar-restaurant in the village, so I have grown up since I was a child between the shop and the bar-restaurant, always seeing people share, enjoy, interact, so perhaps it is easy for me to connect and talk to people, I am always interested in knowing what they are looking for and I feel a sincere desire to help them find it.
And that wish and goal still prevails today in your daily activity at Balearhouse
Yes, and not only mine, but that of the entire team, we share the same goals, the same objectives and the same common philosophy of operating from the maximum proximity and absolute integrity and professionalism, to continue generating relationships of trust with our clients that allow us to keep expanding our circle through their own recommendations.
For me, the team is fundamental, Ilka, Patricia, Blanca, Germán, all of them. Without a good team it would have been impossible to be where we are, that is very clear, and human capital is very important in a family business: consideration for each other, and not only on a professional level but also at a personal level. That there is fluidity between us and that we all look towards the same direction, that we feel that we are all part of something bigger, which is to contribute to make the dreams of many people come true.
When someone comes to Balearhouse looking to rent or buy the home of your dreams, we move heaven and earth to get you what you are looking for, whether it is an investment range of €500,000 or 10 million, we value and treat the dreams of our clients equally, and we strive to ensure that each one gets what they are looking for.
Integrity and transparency are very important to us, and especially in this sector, where people entrust you with one of the most important decisions of their lives, such as the purchase and sale of a property.
We are always clear in our assessment of what is being asked of us, and if we see that something is not feasible, we prefer to tell the client with all transparency that they can get it out of their heads, and we offer them the possibility of redirecting them to something else that does fit both their budget and their expectations.
This happens sometimes, when clients want to buy something that you clearly see that could not fit them in the long run due to their profile, since a client who is single or has just separated or divorced, does not have the same needs as an entire family, and I feel the responsibility to let them know the truth and try to guide them towards the properties and areas that I know will be good for them, and carry out the operation knowing that they will be satisfied.
If I see that their decision is not the right one, I would rather not do that operation, rather than leave a customer unhappy.
When our customers trust our judgment, we get it right, and nothing gives us more satisfaction than their happiness. Now we are in an operation that they have confirmed is going well because the bank is going to help them with the financing, and the client, a Canadian customer, says to me on the phone: «Jesus, I am happy» And I replied, well, if you are happy, so am I.
You can’t imagine what a great satisfaction when they tell me that, because we had been with that operation for two months and his wife had fallen in love with the house, so we were all there fighting with one thing and another…When they hand over the house in June and we all go to see it together, you say, «This, to me, is priceless.»

Jesús, one of the most important added values in your sector is to have a deep knowledge of the market
Undoubtedly, and at Balearhouse we use all our resources to locate the best properties and know at all times the new construction that is being built on the island, in this way we can not only offer the client the best options available at all times, but often anticipate when it comes to offering what we think could best suit them. based on what is being built or will be built on the island.
Due to our client profile, we tend to have more searches for properties of High Standing, as we are also closely linked to the Elite Sport, and the high-level athlete, in general, also works a lot by word of mouth, just like the directors of football teams, because they are well-known people who value above all else seriousness, professionalism, honesty and privacy, they want to establish trusted contacts with a lot of discretion, And we in Balearhouse We meet all these requirements, but as I always say, we can make «a tailor-made suit» for any client. They guide us on the budget, give us the parameters of what they are looking for, and we find it for them.
On an international level, we usually have the usual customer profile of visitors who come to Mallorca and the Balearic Islands: Europeans, Swedes and Americans, and we also work a lot, almost 50% I would say, with national customers.
We have a fairly balanced portfolio.

Well, come to Mallorca, this island is very worth it and those who don’t know it yet should come as soon as possible to experience it. Then we’ll see if they leave… (laughs).
Not only Mallorca, the Balearic Islands are a true paradise, both Mallorca and Ibiza and Formentera and also Menorca, each island with its own style and identity, and professionals from all sectors, not just ours, strive daily to offer the best to both our resident local clients and our tourists and visitors, and to be up to the task of continuing to attract new tourists and customers to a quality destination.
