PRESIDENT
ASSOCIATION OF INDUSTRIALISTS OF MALLORCA
.TOGETHER WE GO FURTHER.
At the head of ASIMA as President for more than a decade, Francisco Martorell Esteban has been able to give the association a seal of closeness, commitment and vision of the future that transcends the business world.
President of ASIMA since 2015 and a much-loved figure in Mallorcan society, Francisco Martorell Esteban not only leads one of the most emblematic industrial associations in Spain, but also represents the greatest exponent of the spirit of service and collaboration that has been able to unite and strengthen the productive fabric of Palma and its surroundings.
In the Balearic Islands, ASIMA is of extraordinary importance because, beyond being one of the oldest and most influential associations on the islands, it has acted as a true industrial and service locomotive, a key agent in the framework of the economic and social development of the Balearic Islands.
ASIMA has been the cradle, roots and driving force behind many of the most emblematic companies in the Balearic Islands.
Founded in 1964, ASIMA has been supporting the trajectory and development of its members for more than 60 years, promoting their tenacity, effort, creativity and innovation and guiding their course towards common objectives oriented towards excellence.
With his affable, close and endearing personality, Francisco Martorell is one of the most respected and at the same time most loved figures in Mallorca, both by the leading figures of the business and institutional fabric.
From his committed and enthusiastic leadership, Francisco Martorell perfectly exemplifies the spirit of service and collaboration that has characterized ASIMA since its origins and throughout its history.
As a proactive and dynamic business organisation, ASIMA currently brings together more than 2,000 companies located in the Son Castelló and Can Valero Business Estates, the first two industrial estates to be built in Spain with private investment and which today employ more than 20,000 workers, together representing more than 20% of the Balearic GDP.
Today, inThe Ambassadors Sections, we talked with thePresident of ASIMAabout the strategic priorities of the association, its main challenges and objectives, and its particular and endearing way of understanding leadership: with humanity, closeness, enthusiasm and a vocation to build community.
It is easy to sense that ASIMA will continue to be a fundamental pillar in the framework of the development of the business fabric of the Balearic Islands.
«There are men who fight one day and are good.
There are others who fight for a year and are better.
There are those who fight for many years and are very good.
But there are those who fight all their lives, those are the essential ones»

President, thank you very much for having us today and for helping to disseminate the strategic and structural change that the Balearic Islands are experiencing towards a more solid, balanced and resilient economic, tourism and social model.
In order to put our readers in context about the size and positioning of ASIMA today, let’s start with a descriptive introduction about its history, its extraordinary trajectory and the importance of the Association in the framework of the economic and business development of Mallorca over more than six decades
Thank you, Patricia. For us it is a pleasure to highlight the role that ASIMA plays within the framework of the business and industrial fabric of Mallorca, and by extension, of the Balearic Islands.
ASIMA, the Association of Industrialists of Mallorca, was founded in 1964 and since then has been a driving force in local economic development, actively contributing to the generation of wealth and well-being for all, managing and promoting the two largest industrial estates in the Balearic Islands: Son Castelló and Can Valero, which today are home to more than 2,000 companies, between SMEs, multinationals and the self-employed, which generate more than 20,000 direct jobs, representing, between them, more than 20% of the Balearic GDP.
Son Castelló and Can Valero were the first industrial estates of private initiative developed in Spain and little by little they became an important engine of the Mallorcan economy.
Today, both continue to be the main national benchmarks in terms of management, location and innovation, highlighting that both have their respective Q certifications for quality.
The birth of ASIMA was a real revolution for the industrial sector of Mallorca.
Over more than six decades, our mission has evolved in tune with the new demands of the economic and social environment and today, we not only work to strengthen the business fabric and improve industrial infrastructures, but we are also fully committed to the values of Sustainability, Innovation and Training, betting on a solid, coherent and well-structured model that combines competitiveness with social and environmental responsibility.

President, ASIMA has established itself as a true locomotive of services and as a key platform for the transition towards a more diversified, digital and environmentally friendly economic model.
That’s right. At ASIMA we understand that our role goes far beyond being a simple representation structure. We are a very active agent in the framework of the economic transformation of Mallorca.
Our commitment to serving our member companies is absolute: we accompany our associates at every stage of their growth, anticipating their needs and helping them to face the challenges of an increasingly dynamic and competitive environment.
From digitalisation to the energy and ecological transition, including the improvement of infrastructures and the attraction of investment, we work every day to generate a more sustainable environment.
At ASIMA, service to member companies is not only our main reason for being, but also the engine that drives each of our actions. It has always been, it is today, and it will continue to be so in the future.
We value the courage, sacrifice, perseverance and ability to overcome of Mallorca’s entrepreneurs, who have been able to move forward with determination even in the most complex moments.
We have gone through major economic crises, and in all of them, our entrepreneurs have shown admirable resilience and have always been able to move forward.
In today’s times, our companies operate in a highly competitive environment, and many of our associates have had to reinvent themselves several times throughout their journey to adapt and survive.
Today, once again, they are generating employment, investing, and contributing strongly to the economic growth of our island.
Our companies have shown that they always find the way to move forward and continue building the future.
Small, medium and large entrepreneurs, and self-employed who, with effort, tenacity, enthusiasm and determination, get up every day with a tireless attitude to continue promoting our society.
«They may cut all the flowers, but they will not be able to stop spring»
– Pablo Neruda

President, you have been at ASIMA since 1988, first with various positions of responsibility, and as President, leading ASIMA, for more than a decade now…
ASIMA is an entity with more than 60 years of history and a long history of success.
I imagine that it will not be easy to summarize the most important milestones achieved, but if I asked you to make a selection of the objectives achieved that you consider most relevant, what would they be?
Summarizing more than six decades of history in a few achievements is indeed not an easy task, but if I had to highlight some of the most significant milestones, I would start with ASIMA’s role as a benchmark not only in the industrial field, but also in Mallorcan society as a whole.
I remember perfectly the moment when I decided to join ASIMA, more than 40 years ago. Life goes by very fast… and now, looking back, I realize that ASIMA has been, and continues to be, one of the most important and rewarding experiences of my life.
I carry out my role as President of ASIMA with absolute dedication, commitment, enthusiasm and dedication, taking the concerns of all our associates as if they were my own.
ASIMA is not just a great team… it is, above all, a big family.
When I first assumed the Presidency in 2015, one of our main purposes was to bring the association closer not only to our member companies, but also to public institutions and citizens, to society in general, and I sincerely believe that we have achieved this.
I would say that one of our most important achievements has been the substantial improvement of the infrastructures of the industrial estates of Son Castelló and Can Valero. During these years, we have worked closely with the Balearic Government, the Consell de Mallorca and the Palma City Council to modernise these spaces, enhance their connectivity and facilitate their adaptation to the challenges of the present and the future.
We have also promoted important digitalisation, sustainability and energy transition projects, which are essential today to guarantee the competitiveness of our companies.
This close public-private collaboration has been decisive in consolidating ASIMA as a true engine of development for Mallorca, always with a clear vocation for a positive impact on society.
Regarding our firm commitment to Innovation and Sustainability, I would like to highlight that, today, fortunately, all companies are already very aware of their importance, but I want to highlight that, at ASIMA, we have implemented these parameters since our origins, although they have evolved as concepts.
Today’s Sustainability is what we used to call Corporate Social Responsibility and, since the beginning of our journey, ASIMA has been a pioneer in the promotion of energy efficiency policies, in the adoption of new technologies and in responsible industrial management, business policies based on a vision ahead of its time, which endures and is maintained to this day.
Perhaps the achievement of which I am most proud is the Social Soul of ASIMA, our human and social dimension and our most important legacy, thanks to the ASIMA Foundation, established in 2010.
The ASIMA Foundation is the solidarity heart of our association, born 15 years ago with the aim of giving back to society a part of everything we have received as a business collective.
Throughout these years, the ASIMA Foundation has promoted projects of great social impact, focused on training, entrepreneurship, inclusion and support for vulnerable groups, because we understand that economic development and business progress are meaningless if they are not accompanied by a real commitment to people and our environment.
Beyond infrastructures, services and institutional representation, what satisfies us most is having built a committed community that believes in shared responsibility and in the value of collaboration and collective work to actively contribute to creating together a fairer, more equitable and more cohesive society.
I am deeply proud of what we have achieved since the creation of the ASIMA Foundation, and I am convinced that its role will be even more relevant in the years to come.
One of the main projects of the ASIMA Foundation is the ASIMA Nursery, in which the children of our members enjoy an endearing and safe place where the little ones feel happy, welcomed and loved, to lay the foundations of their lives in an environment that encourages socialization and autonomy.
The ASIMA Nursery School accompanies children in their learning process to advance to be more autonomous every day, to relate to other children of their age and to understand that they have the potential to be what they want to be in life, but above all, to learn to be happy, to play, to laugh, to sing and to discover the world around them with no limits other than those of their own imagination.

Another important project of the ASIMA Foundation is the Social Gardens, where we carry out social activities on a rustic plot of 14,000 m2 on the Sóller road, where any worker (or retiree) of an ASIMA member company can have a plot of land, from 20m2, equipped with water and electricity, free of charge.
With this project we want to promote the practice of organic farming based on sustainability criteria and contribute to the improvement of the industrial urban landscape, as well as involve social entities and promote relations between workers and entrepreneurs in the Son Castelló and Can Valero industrial estates.

President, I cannot imagine a person who better represents the concept of collective leadership based on trust, collaboration and closeness than you.
From his relevant position and his unwavering commitment to ASIMA, he has managed to win the esteem and affection not only of Mallorcan society, but also of prominent figures in the business world and the public sector.
What is its secret? How do you manage to do such a demanding job so well and, at the same time, garner such sincere recognition?
Thank you very much, Patricia, if that’s how you perceive me.
Receiving this recognition, especially when it is accompanied by affection, is very gratifying and gives meaning to the effort, time and energy that I dedicate with dedication to my work as President of ASIMA.
To be honest, I don’t think there is a secret. I have always understood that, beyond any position or responsibility, what truly makes the difference are people. Human relationships are at the heart of everything we do.
My way of working, of being and of living, is based on values that I consider essential: honesty, humility, transparency, responsibility and, above all, closeness, collaboration and dialogue, and all of these are also values inherent in ASIMA‘s DNA.
Over the years I have learned that, in an environment as competitive and demanding as the business one, if you are going to dedicate your life to building and growing your company, it is much more enriching to do so from empathy, respect and generosity.
That attitude creates strong bonds and builds true trust.
After all, we are human. We all feel, we all go through joys and difficulties and in a world as changing and full of uncertainty as the one we live in, where terrible things happen not far from us, any gesture that brings humanity, kindness, joy or sincere support is invaluable.
For me, closeness is not only a strategy of good leadership, it is my way of being.
From the first day at the helm of ASIMA , I decided to listen carefully to all our associates, understand their concerns and work collaboratively to promote effective and truly useful solutions for them.
I believe that people perceive when your interest is genuine and when you are there, not out of prominence, but out of a vocation for service and conviction in collective improvement.
And yes, it is also true that leading involves making difficult decisions and facing complex challenges, but I have always tried to do it through dialogue, empathy and generosity.
I try to make the best decisions with my head, and push them forward with the strength of my heart.

I also feel deeply grateful for the backing, support and affection that I have received during all these years and that I continue to receive every day.
I am fortunate to have a magnificent team, with a committed board of directors, and to be surrounded by great people and great professionals, and that all our collaborators, both in the public and private sectors, share with us this vision of humane, constructive, collaborative and close leadership.
From the first day I assumed the Presidency of ASIMA, I did so with the firm conviction that the business sector and the community in general need leaders willing to work for the common welfare, because for me what really matters is the positive impact we can generate in the lives of others, and for that we do not have to seek personal rewards. but tangible results that benefit the entire community.
As President, I dedicate an enormous amount of time, energy and effort to ASIMA and I do so in a totally altruistic way, and my work brings me enormous satisfaction, because for me there is nothing more gratifying than actively contributing to the economic and social development of our associates and the business fabric of our island.
That is the main motivation and raison d’être of everything we do, from the promotion of sustainable industrial policies to the improvement of infrastructures or collaboration with other entities, everything has as its main objective to serve our associates and actively contribute to the growth and well-being of our companies, our community and society.

Francisco Martorell Esteban, President of ASIMA, and Toni Monjo Tomás, Managing Director, a wonderful team deeply united

President, what are the main priorities of ASIMA’s roadmap today?
We are living in a crucial moment of transformation, we are in a process of change towards a more sustainable model, both economically and socially, and at ASIMA we are fully committed to this transition.
The main priorities of our roadmap are aligned with the major global challenges, but always with a very local approach, adapted to the specific needs of our companies and the environment of Mallorca.
Our Strategic Plan 2024–2027 mainly covers the comprehensive improvement of infrastructures and services, the promotion of sustainable mobility and public transport, the reduction of bureaucracy through the creation of a one-stop shop and collaboration with the Directorate-General for Industrial Estates in the Balearic Government and the Directorate-General for Industrial Estates and Infrastructures in Palma City Council to develop new projects.
In terms of sustainability, at ASIMA we are actively working to promote the energy transition in industrial estates, promoting the use of renewable energies and fostering the circular economy. Our goal is for companies in Mallorca to be not only competitive, but also responsible with the environment and society.
Another key priority is digitalisation. We know that to stay ahead of the curve, we must facilitate the integration of new technologies into companies in our industry.
From the implementation of digital solutions in business management to the improvement of connectivity in our industrial estates, technological innovation is key to ensuring long-term competitiveness.
We are working closely and continuously with public administrations because we believe that public-private collaboration is an essential pillar to move forward effectively and with a vision of the future.
In the field of infrastructure and maintenance, ASIMA has intensified its collaboration with Palma City Council to improve the Son Castelló and Can Valero industrial estates.
Among the outstanding actions are the asphalting of the entire Son Castelló industrial estate, with completion scheduled for this year 2025.
We are also working on improving urban transport through new bus routes and shuttle buses and the possible implementation of park-and-rides.
Energy communities are being developed for shared self-consumption, the installation of solar panels on the roofs of industrial warehouses and an electric charging station with 10 fast charging points has been installed in the Polígono Son Castelló.
We firmly believe that the business fabric and public institutions share the responsibility of promoting the economic and social development of our territory and, thanks to institutional support, we have been able to materialize key projects that strengthen the competitiveness of our companies and contribute to the economic and sustainable development of the island.
Our commitment at ASIMA is to continue promoting this type of alliances and synergies between the public and private sectors, as they are not only vital for business progress, but also for moving towards a more prosperous, cohesive and sustainable society.

Francisco Martorell Esteban, President of ASIMA, and Jaime Martínez Llabres, Mayor of Palma
Another fundamental point on our roadmap is the training and development of talent, as we are convinced that the key to our future lies in a qualified workforce prepared to face the challenges of the new economy.
At ASIMA, we support continuous training and innovation promotion programs to ensure that our companies have the best professionals.
ASIMA continues to strengthen its commitment to training through the HOTECMA Higher Training School, located in the old Son Castelló fire station, and the ASIMA Youth section, launched in 2019, continues to promote networking, training and corporate social responsibility activities for the new generations.

Francisco Martorell Esteban, President of ASIMA, with HOTECMA representatives
President, what is ASIMA’s current dimension in terms of members, its main sectors and the services that ASIMA offers them?
As Mallorca’s leading business organisation, ASIMA brings together companies from a wide range of sectors, from industry and logistics to services and technology.
Among our main services, in addition to acting as a bridge between the private sector and public administrations and offering advice and support to companies in areas such as digitalisation, sustainability, energy efficiency and human resources training, ASIMA is also distinguished by its commitment to the internationalisation of companies in Mallorca.
Through our network of contacts and our presence in international forums and events, ASIMA provides its members with access to new markets and business opportunities outside the Balearic Islands, thus contributing to the positioning of Mallorca as a centre of innovation and economic development not only locally, but also in the global context.

Which sectors are currently showing the most dynamism in terms of internationalisation?
While the tourism sector remains the fundamental pillar of the islands’ economy, the luxury tourism segment has seen significant growth, especially in international markets such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Scandinavian countries.
The Balearic Islands are establishing themselves as a high-end destination, attracting tourists interested in exclusive and sustainable experiences: sustainability has become a key factor, with eco-tourism initiatives gaining popularity among global travellers.
The nautical sector of the Balearic Islands is another of the sectors that has made the most progress in terms of internationalisation.
The islands are renowned for their first-class port infrastructure and luxury marinas, which attracts shipowners and companies in the nautical sector worldwide.
The promotion of the Balearic Islands as a destination of excellence in the nautical sector is positioning the islands as a hub for luxury sailing in the Mediterranean, with a growing demand for related services and products.
I would also highlight the agri-food industry: In recent years, exports of Mallorcan agri-food products, especially gourmet products such as olive oil, wine and sausages, have grown significantly in international markets.
The Balearic Islands are managing to position themselves as a benchmark in the production of quality food, which has opened up new business opportunities and commercial alliances in Europe, Asia and America.
Also in the field of emerging technologies and innovation, the Balearic Islands are seeing significant momentum. In the technology sector, especially in areas such as digitalization, cybersecurity, innovation and of course Artificial Intelligence, Mallorca has managed to attract technology startups and innovation companies looking to expand their international reach, in part thanks to tax incentives and our strategic location in the heart of the Mediterranean.
In the field of renewable energies, Mallorca is very committed to the transition to more sustainable energy sources, and more and more technology and international investment companies are interested in projects related to solar energy and energy efficiency on our islands.

A real renaissance, without a doubt, in the potential of Mallorca and the Balearic Islands in terms of economic diversification.
ASIMA, always adaptable to the changes required by the times we live in, also exemplifies these changes, not only in its internal structure, but even in its corporate brand
That’s right. In terms of activity, we have expanded our services to cover new areas of interest for our companies, in order to offer fully tangible added value to all our members, helping them to face the challenges of the present and to take advantage of the opportunities of the future.
As for our internal structure, we have implemented improvements in the way we organize ourselves and relate to our associates, with the aim of being even more agile and effective in our work.
We have strengthened our work team, integrated new professional profiles and established new communication channels to ensure that our actions are more direct, inclusive and participatory.
And of course, adaptation has also made its way into our brand image. A few months ago, ASIMA renewed its visual identity to reflect a more modern image, in line with current times.
This update is not only an aesthetic change, but also a reflection of our evolution as an organisation, which continues to be the pillar of Mallorca’s industry, but now with a more open and international vision, and a firm commitment to innovation and sustainability.

President, you have been leading ASIMA for more than a decade.
How would you describe the main changes that have occurred in the last 10 years?
In the last ten years, we have witnessed a significant transformation, both economically and structurally, which has had a profound impact on ASIMA and the business fabric of Mallorca.
These changes have been driven by a series of key factors that reflect the evolution of our island and, therefore, of the association itself.
Firstly, the impact of digitalisation has been one of the most important changes.
A decade ago, many of our associates were still in the early stages of technological adaptation.
Nowadays, digitalization is an essential factor in the development of companies, and ASIMA has worked hard to help our members integrate new technologies into their production processes, from automation to digital presence, including the optimization of resources.
In addition, we have witnessed a transformation in the profile of the companies that are part of ASIMA.
We have seen how the business fabric diversified, incorporating new innovative companies in emerging sectors such as technology, biotechnology, renewable energies and the green economy.
This new reality has required us to adapt our service offering and strengthen our capabilities in key areas such as sustainability and internationalisation.
Finally, we cannot forget the change in the global perception of the Balearic Islands, which has gone from being a sun and beach tourist destination to a centre of innovation, sustainability and business quality.
ASIMA has been a key and proactive player in this change, helping to position Mallorca and the Balearic Islands as a dynamic region open to the world, attractive not only for tourists and visitors, but also for investors, businessmen and international entrepreneurs.

President, last year, ASIMA celebrated its 60th Anniversary, there is no more tangible proof of the work so well done that has been carried out by the Association throughout its history….
It was an unforgettable and very exciting gala. For me, celebrating ASIMA’s 60th anniversary is not only to commemorate an institutional trajectory, but to pay tribute to the collective effort of thousands of entrepreneurs, workers, families and collaborators who have been the real engine of this history of progress.
ASIMA was born six decades ago from the visionary impulse of a small group of industrial entrepreneurs who knew how to anticipate the needs of a Mallorca in the midst of transformation.
ASIMA was the result of a dream. Today, sixty years later, we continue to proudly defend that same entrepreneurial spirit, adapted to the new times.
Our 60th Anniversary was an opportunity to look back with gratitude, but also to continue projecting ourselves into the future with enthusiasm and commitment to our main purpose: to serve and support our associates, to be at the side of our companies, to anticipate challenges and to be an active voice in the economic and social development of our island.
What makes ASIMA unique is not only its industrial estates, its infrastructure or its services.
What really defines us is the human community we have built: brave, committed businessmen who believe in a job well done, in collaboration and in rootedness in this wonderful territory.
These first 60 years have been a story of success and overcoming.
We have lived through good times and we have also gone through and overcome difficult crises, but if there is one thing ASIMA has demonstrated throughout its history, it is its ability to reinvent itself, to adapt, and to continue to be useful to companies and Mallorcan society.

Francisco Martorell Esteban, deeply touched while enjoing the precious ASIMA’s 60 Anniversary Gala with Marga Prohens, President of the Balearic Islands Government

President, how would you describe the emerging ASIMA, the essence of ASIMA today?
I believe that, today, far beyond representing Mallorcan companies, ASIMA has become a key driver for positive change on the island, with an open and adaptable vision with closeness and collaboration as fundamental values.
We consider ourselves an agile and flexible association that listens to and understands the needs of our associates, responding to their challenges and offering practical solutions that promote their growth and competitiveness.
In recent years, we have made sustainability a backbone in all our initiatives, we firmly believe that the future of the island’s business lies in the adoption of sustainable and responsible models, and we are determined to lead this transition.
ASIMA has evolved as a modern and dynamic organisation that embodies the business vanguard of Mallorca, committed to the sustainable growth and internationalisation of its companies, and always ready to adapt to the new times and challenges presented by the globalised world.
Fantastic President. A final message to our international readers, mainly executives and investors, about the main strengths of this magnificent territory not only as a tourist destination but above all as a business, industry and investment destination
The strengths of the Balearic Islands in general, and Mallorca in particular, as a business and investment destination are many and very solid.
First of all, our strategic location in the heart of the Mediterranean makes us a perfect natural bridge to do business not only with the rest of Europe, but also with America, Africa and the Middle East.
This geographical position, together with our modern infrastructure and first-class international connectivity, makes our region ideal not only to host international businesses seeking expansion and opportunities in key markets, but also to develop joint projects, both here and in third countries, hand in hand with our companies.
In terms of quality of life, Mallorca and the Balearic Islands offer an unrivalled combination of factors that attract professionals and entrepreneurs from all over the world.
A spectacular natural environment, with a privileged climate throughout the year, and a unique cultural and leisure offer, make our region an ideal place to both live and do business, offering an almost idyllic balance between work and rest in a destination that combines high professional standards with an excellent quality of life.
In addition, the Balearic Islands are strongly committed to sustainability, which is a key factor for the future.
Public policies and private initiatives are geared towards a green and circular economy, and the opportunities for investment in renewable energy and sustainable technologies are vast.
Companies that are committed to sustainable development will find in the Balearic Islands an ideal environment to innovate and grow, with the support of both society and local authorities.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have trusted ASIMA and Mallorca and the Balearic Islands as a strategic place to do business.
The future we are building together is full of possibilities, and I am convinced that, with collective effort, constant innovation and commitment to sustainability, the Balearic Islands will continue to be a benchmark not only in tourism, but also in industry, business and investment.
The Balearic Islands is a destination in constant evolution, full of opportunities for all those looking to invest in a dynamic environment, and if we have learned anything over the years, it is that the key to success lies in collaboration, in the ability to adapt and in the shared vision of a better future for all.
I would like to thank, from the bottom of my heart, all those who have been part of our history until today, the founders, the previous presidents, all the boards of directors, the ASIMA team, all the institutions that have accompanied us on this path and of course our associates.
Now, with our sights set on the future, we want to continue promoting a competitive, cohesive Mallorca that is prepared for new global challenges.
To all the readers who have learned more about ASIMA today through this interview, I invite you to be an active part of this transformative project, to join us and to discover for yourself everything that our islands and our companies can offer you.
